The Brief
Ash and Spice’s owners wanted to introduce outdoor access in a way that felt safe, calm, and manageable — particularly as both cats were older and had never experienced being outside before.
Alongside this, they wanted more than just a functional enclosure.
The space needed to work as an extension of their home — somewhere they could sit, relax, and enjoy the garden, protected from the elements.
The Design
We created a fully enclosed, conservatory-style catio — designed to feel structured, intentional, and seamlessly integrated with the property.
The exterior was clad and finished in a deep anthracite tone using specialist Osmo paint, giving the build a clean, architectural presence that complements the home rather than competing with it.
Large framed openings maintain visibility and light, while a polycarbonate roof ensures the space remains bright, dry, and usable throughout the year.
A key feature of this design is the integrated double entrance system — forming a secure transition space that allows access in and out without any risk of escape.
The Build
Inside, the focus shifted to creating a space that encourages natural movement without overwhelming.
We installed a series of bespoke features, including:
Stepped wall shelving for elevation and rest
A gentle access ramp for ease of movement
Rope peg ladders to introduce light, instinct-led activity
A custom-built cat tree with integrated cat cube for comfort and retreat
Structurally, exposed framing details and clean joinery give the interior a refined, almost architectural feel — elevating it beyond a typical enclosure.
Externally, fitted window boxes soften the dark cladding and allow for seasonal planting, helping the structure sit naturally within the garden setting.
The Result
For Ash and Spice, this space introduced something entirely new — at their own pace.
As expected with older cats, the transition took time. But with a secure, enclosed environment designed around calm exploration, they’ve been able to gradually build confidence and curiosity.
Now, the catio offers a balance of stimulation and security — a place to observe, rest, and engage with the outdoors safely.
For the owners, it’s become something more:
A usable, sheltered garden space that can be enjoyed alongside their cats — whatever the weather.
