✨ The Hatfield Peverel Pergola Catio| Essex Catios
Project type
A Combination | Pergola Style Catio By Custom Pet Enclosures
Location
Hatfield Peveral, Chelmsford, Essex
Designed For
Mittens and Bailey
The Brief
This project came with a unique challenge.
The available space had unusually low roof levels, making standard, pre-built solutions completely unsuitable. The clients wanted a catio that felt intentional and well-designed — not compromised or squeezed into place.
Just as importantly, the structure needed to integrate seamlessly with the home, creating a natural extension rather than a standalone add-on.
The Design
We approached this as a fully bespoke solution from the ground up.
To overcome the height restrictions, we designed and fabricated custom structural brackets, allowing us to work precisely within the constraints of the space while maintaining strength, proportion, and a clean visual finish.
The pergola-style design keeps the structure feeling open and light, while still providing a defined and architectural presence.
The roof was carefully considered, combining:
Polycarbonate panels for shelter and light
Mesh sections to maintain airflow and connection to the outdoors
The entire structure was finished in a soft, contemporary tone using specialist Osmo Grey Beige — chosen to complement the property and surrounding garden.
The Build
Internally, the focus was on creating vertical interest within a restricted height.
We introduced a layered layout using:
Handcrafted rope peg ladders
Ramps designed for easy movement
Shelving at varying levels for rest and observation
Custom-built cat cubes for comfort and retreat
Every element was carefully positioned to maximise usable space without overwhelming the structure — ensuring it felt balanced, functional, and calm.
The Result
What began as a difficult, restrictive area has been completely transformed.
Mittens and Bailey now have a space that feels open, engaging, and purpose-built for them — despite the original limitations.
For the owners, the result is just as important.
A clean, well-integrated structure that enhances their outdoor space rather than compromising it.
This project is a perfect example of what bespoke really means —
Working with the space, not against it.
